Gift Guide – Best of Skincare, Bodycare & Haircare

I love receiving gift sets. Not only are they great value, they make quite pretty gifts with the seasonal festive boxes & wrapping!

I’ve curated a few sets from a range of prices depending on the $$$ you might want to spend. Almost all of these are currently 20-25% off so you get to save even more on a box set that’s already good value!

P.S- Everything you see in todays guide are brands I love; and products that work!

  1. Olaplex Healthy Hair Essentials (SGD95 via Sephora SG)

Olaplex does one of these sets every year and they ALWAYS sell out. I make sure I pick this up as soon as it goes on sale. Not only is it perfect for gifting, it’s also great for personal use if you want mini versions of your regular Olaplex haircare range.

Incase you have never tried Olaplex, they are essentially haircare that’s developed for damaged hair.. basically for repairing , nourishing and smoothing frizz.

Currently on sale at Sephora Singapore as well as Cult Beauty (25% off).

2. Clé de Peau beauty The First Step Serum Skincare Set (SGD380 via Sephora SG)

Have you seen CPB’s new holiday packaging? It’s divine! Each year they collaborate with an artist and spoil us with the most gorgeous packaging ever. The First Step Serum Skincare Set contains a full size of one of my favourite products by CPB; The Serum. It also includes three minis for a complete skincare routine so you get the whole Clé de Peau experience.

3. Charlotte Tilbury 3 Magic Steps to Perfect-Looking Skin (£90 on Cult Beauty)

I don’t think of CT as a skincare brand but I do love her Magic Serum for skin prep. It primes the skin but also contain anti-ageing ingredients which is a win win. The texture is very refined.. so luxurious as it glides on the skin; it’s light enough for even oily skin types but also nourishing for dry skin as well. Set comes with two additional mini creams as well.

Currently on sale on Cult Beauty which is having their 25% off Black Friday Event.

4. Sunday Riley The Big Glow Deluxe Good Genes Kit (£159.20)

When I saw this kit on Space NK I knew immediately it HAD to be in my gift guide. Good Genes is already a cult product but this supersized version (100ml) with amazing limited edition packaging is everything I look for in a skincare gift set. I have not seen it anywhere else but luckily, Space NK has 20% off on this product. GRAB IT NOW! Set comes with a mini Pink Drink (25ml) and a Tidal Water Cream (15g).

Perfect for your bestie or any die hard Good Genes lover.

5. Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Magic (£44)

Glow Recipe makes great skincare for younger skin. If you are looking for something effective yet affordable, I love this little set which makes a perfect gift to anyone who’s getting into skincare. Whether it’s for someone in their 20’s or early 30’s this set would be ideal for maintaining glowing skin while refining pores.

The set comes with a PHA/BHA Toner (150ml) + Niacinamide Dew Drops serum (15ml) + Watermelon Glow Hyaluronic Clay Pore Tight Facial (25ml).

6. Percy & Reed All Kinds Of Wonder-ful Hair Set (SGD112)

Percy & Reed holiday sets are great for gifting. Not only do they come in beautiful packaging, this set also includes a sleeping mask that’s just too cute! I’m obsessed! Two of the products are full sized and two are minis. Not necessarily great value when you consider the full sized items each at SGD40 and extra minis. But it is worth grabbing while Sephora has their Black Friday sale.

7. Heure Ageless Night Treatment Moisturiser (SGD190)

If there’s one luxe item worth gifting as a stand alone product, the Heure night cream would be my pick. Now that Heure retails at Sephora you can save on luxe items like this and grab it for less $$$. This anti-ageing night cream will help maintain youth by firming skin and also smoothing wrinkles. I love the texture. It’s not too light, also not greasy. I’ll be gifting one to mom this Christmas since I loved mine soo much!

8. Augustinus Bader Body Care set (Body Cream + Body Oil)

If you are on the look out for luxury bodycare, it doesn’t get more luxe than an AB bodycare kit. I’ve got the Body Lotion in my basket and it’ll be a gift from ‘me-to-me’ this Christmas. Augustinus Bader is renowned for a formula that helps regenerate skin, restoring it back to it’s youthful healthy self.

Available directly via the Augustinus Bader site and also Cult Beauty (where you can currently get 25% off)

9. Omorovicza Perfecting Duo (£50)

A perfectly curated no fuss duo is always a winner. This kit contains one of my favourite mists of all time – the Queen Of Hungary Mist (infused with orange blossom) + a perfecting lip balm to keep lips smooth and plump all day.

Did I mention the pink packaging is just SO cute?!

10. Augustinus Bader Body Lotion (£75)

If you are gifting a Body Lotion.. might as well make it substantial.

I love a luxe cream to pamper myself and so far i’ve been a die hard fan of the Clé de Peau one. At SGD 150 a pop, it’s pricey but over time you do notice a difference in skin texture. The new AB Body Lotion is a wonderful investment for body care and makes a luxe gift for siblings and anyone ultra special.

Currently retailing at $95 on the Augustinus Bader site, and Cult Beauty.

11. Biossance Overachiever Gift set (SGD89 via Sephora SG)

Biossance is a brand that’s new-ish to my regime and so far everything I have tried has been exceptional. As someone who looks for clear results, the brand though may not come across as ‘exciting’ does deliver some stellar products. I love their Lactic Acid serum and the eye cream is one of the best i’ve tried for dull/dry under eyes. If you are new to the brand or plan on gifting skincare, this set is a great introduction to the brand.

Clé de Peau Beauté Enhancing Eye Contour Cream Supreme Review

For as long as I remember reviewing eye care has been one of my favourite things to do here on Bubbly Michelle; and when Clé de Peau relaunched their eye cream last summer I packed my little golden jar to join me on summer vacay and been using it ever since.

Lately, i’ve also been enjoying a little extra pampering during quarantine and wanted to include their eye mask too; which is so perfect for these very strangely restless days when people are working from home and trying to get their minds off this current crisis! Just a little treat to keep the spirits up, if you may.

Cle de peau beaute eye cream

As most eye care in the luxury market, this new eye cream is packaged in a jar. There’s also the usual spatula (but!..dual ended), to massage product in for maximum absorption. I’ve found daily massaging really does help the product absorb thoroughly and increases circulation while also de-puffing in the mornings. If you haven’t tried it, it really is a game changer.

The Enhancing Eye Contour Cream Supreme is a light weight albeit deeply hydrating soft cream. The texture is silky smooth and absorbs very fast. I’d grab a rice grains amount for each application which is enough for both eyes. It’s the perfect prep if you wear makeup daily. There’s no issue of piling.

When it comes to anti-aging creams it always feels like it takes forever to see obvious results.. but with persistence and a good two months in to my routine I noticed my eye contour looking fresher and brighter. The circles and tiredness I normally see when I wake up had significantly diminished.

Around the 3-4 month mark, (I still had plenty left in my jar) and my wrinkles undoubtedly smoothed out. I don’t have severe lines, but with my eye shape I do have a noticeable few; obviously any help in this regard is always appreciated. Overall I see my eye area looking firmer and less saggy and just brighter.

You will love this if you are,

  • In your early 30’s and starting on an anti-aging routine
  • Have fine lines and loosing firmness around the eye contour
  • Need a light weight eye cream
  • Looking for something to help with dark circles

This is not for,

  • Anyone with severely dry under eyes; I just don’t think it’ll be rich enough to really solve that problem.

Bottom Line

It’s a great starter anti-aging eye cream. It won’t be too heavy for younger skin. Just the right amount of daily hydration and perfect texture to wear under makeup. I don’t mind being a little extra generous at night to make sure my skin is extra hydrated as I sleep.

It really does work well to brighten the eye area if you suffer from dark shadows under your eyes and erases the finer lines preventing them from becoming severe.. again, like I said, persistence is key.

The best way to describe the results would be firmer, lifted skin with brightness in the eyes for a youthful look. In a way I guess it’s a bit like an instagram filter. For the eyes.

Overall my switch to Clé de Peau Basic Care Routine has been really helpful for maintaining well hydrated, ‘juicy’ skin. I’ve been also loving the Hydro Softening Lotion which is a must before any other skincare goes on.

Have you tried Cpb skincare?

Tatcha Kissu Lip Mask Review

Early January I got my hands on the ever illusive Tatcha Kissu Lip Mask. This initially launched a while back in selective regions & online at Tatcha, but now available in Singapore via (Sephora) & hopefully here to stay.

I always wondered if it REALLY was worth the hype?

Tatcha Kissu lip mask review

The Kissu Lip Mask according to the brand is an ‘ultra-soothing Japanese peach jelly that smooths, plumps and helps restore overnight for soft, pillowy lips.’

‘Formulated without parabens, synthetic fragrance, mineral oil, sulfate detergents, phthalates, urea, DEA, or TEA. Non Irritating. Non sensitising. Dematologist tested’.

Tatcha kissu

The product is packaged in the cutest little acrylic jar with it’s own dedicated gold spatula. Ideally I wish it could be attached and stored on top of the jar like other Tatcha creams, but still handy and useful never the less for getting product out without having to dip fingers in (which can contaminate the product).

Even for the pickiest users, this feels super cushion-y on the lip and soft, with a lot of slip and no tackiness. What I like most is there’s no artificial fragrance. It’s near impossible to find a lip mask that’s fragrance-free these days and thank goodness someone decided to make one!

Tatcha kissu

On a regular day i’d scoop out a small pearl sized amount for one application. Within 1-2 hours all flakes are softened and can be scrubbed off to reveal the softest lips. It’s like a conditioning treatment.

Sadly I don’t find it very useful as an overnight treatment as most of it gets rubbed off on my pillow while I sleep; I like to bury my face into the pillow, one side at least… soooo, this i’ve been saving for days when I really need some TLC after an at home facial. Or when I just want to condition my dry lips as I work.

Bottom line

Overall I do love the product. It’s pretty spendy, and i’d classify it as a lip-luxury that’s more of a want than a ‘need’. If you constantly suffer from dry lips it’s a good product to invest in. I feel the appeal in it for me is that it’s fragrance-free and has a nice texture and most importantly gets the job done.

Lip mask leneige tatcha sulwhasoo

*To make this post more informative i’m rounding up some of the other masks i’ve used before. The most popular is one by Laneige. It comes in several flavours and freely available; also the most budget friendly at a great SGD27! (everything else is well over SGD45). Last year Sulwhasoo introduced their version of lip mask in a gorgeous pot, and quite similar to the Tatcha. I’ve been liking that too.

I would say the closest in terms of texture and conditioning capacity is the Sulwhasoo Essential Lip Mask. If you can’t get your hands on Kissu, this would be my next recommendation.  It’s mildly fragranced.

The Estée Lauder Lip Repair Potion isn’t quite as remarkable as the others but a nice contender if you feel you could use some lip therapy on the go. I also like this as it’s a thin formula and can be worn under lipstick for more comfort.

Personally for daily (day time) use, i’m a fan of the Hera Lip Balms that I find are excellent for hydrating and bringing some extra colour. A true winner for dry chapped lips. I never knew a tinted lip balm (that looked like a lipstick with full on colour) could ever be so conditioning. I am blown away.

Another great lip conditioner that launched several years ago is the Clarins Lip Comfort Oil. I don’t think there’s still a formula to rival this. It’s one of those all time greats for me. I even hoarded multiple back-ups when it launched. The new Dior lip oils that dropped a few months were a poor copy. Thick & heavy, they feel more like a sticky gloss to me. I had zero good things to say about it; the only merit would be the luxurious packaging.

CHANEL Sublimage Cleansing Collection Review

CHANEL just launched a new line of cleansers under the Sublimage range. Their most premium (anti-aging) line especially formulated for mature/dry skin. Sublimage has been missing a ‘Cleansing Ritual’ in their lineup, therefore super excited to see these new additions!

The packaging for the collection is next level! All the jars are glass, including the Cleansing Water that instantly registers as ultra luxe in it’s hefty glass bottle. I find glass packaging very travel unfriendly, though I doubt the collection was created for on-the-go use if you get what I mean!

Chanel describes the collection more than just a cleansing ritual; rather an opportunity to enjoy a peaceful moment in the morning and evening to calm and relax the mind.

This ultra sensorial cleansing experience is enriched with natural-origin Vanilla Planifolia Water and Harungana extract for their antioxident and detoxifying properties. Promising real results for skin that appears more luminous day by day.

The collection consists of,

Sublimage Vanilla Grain Scrub  (50g)

Sublimage Gel-to-Oil Cleanser (150ml)

Sublimage Cleansing Water (125ml)

Sublimage Soap (115g)

Among these new additions the Vanilla Grain Scrub is one of my favourites! It’s made up of vanilla pod seeds to gently exfoliate and tiny jojoba microbeads that lift away any residual impurities.

Sublimage Vanilla Scrub

The grains are suspended in a very thin gel and feel ultra fine, I use two scoops with the spatula that’s provided.

The round beads ensure skin isn’t damaged and exfoliated gentlest as possible without dragging or scratching. Once rinsed off, skin is left feeling silky without any tightness or dryness.

P.S- The scent of the Scrub is a very subtle vanilla (a true vanilla and not the artificial kind) which makes the experience that much more enjoyable as you polish off dull skin for that luminous glow!

P.P.S- The other cleansers of the range have more of the original Sublimage (perfume like) scent. Though not overpowering.

The Sublimage Gel-to-Oil Cleanser is a clear thick gel; to be used by applying directly onto the skin  and massaged in till it transforms into an oil.

Sublimage gel to oil cleanser

Once rinsed, this leaves the skin ultra soothed and comfortable to the touch, without any tightness. It doesn’t leave any residue and rinses off completely taking with it all impurities and makeup.

Usually a single step cleanse isn’t enough when I wear makeup, however with this I feel it does an exceptionally good job and don’t feel the need to double cleanse. Hands down the best luxury cleanser i’ve tried.

Luckily the tube contains quite a generous 150ml, which makes parting with $100+ for a cleanser a little easier. A really good buy nonetheless and one of my favourites from this collection which i’d recommend trying.

Sublimage Cleansing Water.

A luxurious (oil-free) water cleanser that’s perfect for your morning skincare routine. Ideal for sweeping off impurities and residue skincare from the night before. The thicker lotion is suspiciously reminiscent of an essence. Leaving the skin deeply hydrated and already prepped for your next step.

Since a water cleanser is not meant to be rinsed off, the antioxidant benefits of the ingredients can be fully appreciated. This would be a great start to a morning routine delivering a healthy dose of antioxidant protection to keep the skin shielded through the day.

The fourth and final installment to the Cleansing Ritual is the Sublimage Soap.

A generous bar that lathers into thick lush foam with it’s natural-origin emulsifier and combination of shea butter and humectants. It allows for a very gentle cleanse without stripping the skin of it’s natural oils.

I myself tend to avoid soaps and feel it’s something of a personal choice being partial to liquid or bar cleansers, however as far as soaps go, I do believe this one’s rather nice. However in all honesty I don’t think i’ll ever bring myself to really purchase one at $100+.

Sublimage cleanser

In my opinion this would make an incredibly luxurious Christmas gift for any skincare lover, since the season is just around the corner! Maybe a combo of the luxurious Vanilla Scrub to make an even more precious!

Bottom line

If you are looking to splurge on just one product from the collection, i’d urge you to try the Gel-to-Oil Cleanser or the Cleansing Water. Both exceeded expectations in terms of sensorial experience and overall effectiveness. I love that these leaves the skin so soft & soothed. If you have dry skin, this line is a must-try if your budget allows.

Epion Star Facial

Facials may seem like a frivolous indulgence, but over the past year i’ve been visiting the Epion Clinic i’ve come to realise facials and aesthetic treatments can not only be a powerful ally as you combat aging, but also make you feel happier and confident resulting from clear, beautiful skin.

Result driven courses of treatments help you reap the benefits of skin ‘Care’. For me it’s been clearer skin with far less breakouts; and of course, youthful features thanks to tighter facial muscles and refined skin texture.

It’s not been easy attaining good skin, I’ve been religiously pampering mine since I was 28 yrs (I did start quite late!). But as I pass through the mid thirties I realised I could do a little more than just rely on lotions and potions, some professional help was missing in my long term plan.

That’s when the Epion Clinic was referred to me by a friend.

I remember the very first day I met Dr. Melvin Tan an ophthalmic-trained aesthetic physician. Apart from the fact that he is very easy to talk to, his no bullshit approach to beauty made me feel very comfortable. Personally I like it when someone clearly defines what can and can not be achieved. I mentioned that I had no intention of having any fillers or botox (to this day I am still filler and botox free!) and my concerns were lifting my facial muscles that are now slowly but surely taken hold of by gravity.

I was recommended the Star Facial. The Clinics signature facial for tightening the muscles, refine the skin and also to bring out that much needed glow. The Star Facial is recommended as a pre-event treatment as it delivers instant results of glowy skin, apart from the significant long term effects.

This signature treatment consists of a Hydra Facial, Infrared Light Therapy and a pampering 24k Gold Mask.

THE STAR FACIAL

Epion clinic, star facial

The session begins with a relaxing cleanse. The skilled therapist at Epion thoroughly strips off any makeup and grime that’s present to prep skin for the first step of this Facial.

Hydrafacial, is the process of clearing up all the congestion of the pores and then super-charging with hydrating serums and peptides to deeply moisturise and nourish the skin.

The pores are deep cleaned with a vacuum extraction and skin’s gently exfoliation. The process takes about 15-20 minutes. The skin then gets a ‘blast’ of serum (a combination of hyaluronic acids and peptides) to help soothe and plump up with moisture.

The second phase of the treatment is, Infrared (red) light therapy, to stimulate the lower levels of the skin and help boost regeneration. As with everything in life, skins natural ability to renew and repair itself slows down with age, becoming less capable of regenerating collagen and repair elastin fibers that make up the structure of the skin. Using the Sciton Skintyte machine, Dr Melvin Tan pulses the skin to encourage collagen growth and tighten the skin. This helps with improving firmness with regular treatments.

The red light treatment generates heat in the lower levels of the skin, stimulating the growth of new collagen.

For my treatment, the targeted areas are the lower cheeks and the forehead, places where the skin has evidently lost it’s ‘fullness’.

Epion clinic, Hydra facial

The 24k Gold mask is then mixed and applied to the entire face (eyes and mouth) and left on for about 20-30mins. Once set, this can finally be lifted off the face (with no discomfort) to reveal radiant skin.

I’ve had six Star Facials this past year, and have noticed my skin breaks out less thanks to the constant clearing of congestion in my pores. My cheek muscles are definitely firmer and the lines on my forehead less severe. I’ve been recommended a more intense lifting treatment next, the Thermage. Maybe my next step, for now though , i’m really pleased at how my skin looks. Dr. Tan has been noticing the changes as well!

FAQ’s

How often do you need to repeat the treatment and frequency?

For noticeable lifting and firming a course of 4-5 is recommended by the Doctor. Preferably done monthly.

Is it painful?

The only step with any discomfort is the Infrared Light Therapy. Is it unbearable? No. But it does take a bit of getting used to.

What made me choose Epion clinic?

Personal recommendation by a friend.

When it comes to aesthetic treatments I trust a friends recommendation more than anything. Also Dr. Melvin Tan is an expert in the field and is one of the five regional faculty members of the Allergan Medical Institute. He travels across the region training doctors on facial beauty and injection techniques (his speciality). If there’s anyone you want to trust with your face (especially if you are looking to Botox or fillers) Dr. Tan would be the one.

Why choose Epion Clinic?

I believe overall just feeling comfortable is key. Specially when your health and wellbeing is in someone else’s hands. All medical procedures are administered by Dr. Tan himself and there’s no compromise on safety. Also bedside manner is important when it comes to choosing someone for treatments and Dr. Melvin Tan is one of the most easy to talk to. He instantly puts you at ease.

Bottomline

Overall I think there’s no shame in trying to improve the way you look. Whether it’s going in for botox or just sticking to laser treatments. It’s up to you.

I am very happy with my results. My skin looks so much better now. Less pigmentation and breakouts with firmer skin.

I would suggest making an appointment for a consultation and take it from there, the treatments are well worth the money.

Belif Aqua Bomb Sleeping Mask Review

Belif Aqua Bomb Sleeping Mask

Recently Belif launched the Aqua Bomb Sleeping Mask. As part of their best selling hydration range the Aqua Bomb (which includes, moisturisers and mists), the sleeping mask is a night time treat to double up your hydration game.

This mask is a lightweight jelly texture with a fragrance similar to all Belif Aqua Bomb products (which I find hard to describe!, almost minty but herbal fresh scent…). A calming treat to those of you who enjoy ‘natural’ skincare.

Sleeping masks are my go-to for days when my skin’s troubled and I don’t feel like loading it with multiple layers of lotions and potions. Just something hydrating to keep it calm and happy. The mask is also an easy way to skip a few steps basically without sacrificing hydration on days you just don’t feel up for a lengthy night time routine. A quick fix before you jump into bed.

The product itself is a wonderful texture, you instantly feel the cooling hydration the second it’s applied to the skin. Cocooned in this gel, the skin takes a very cosy nap to wake up refreshed and plump! The radiance and glow of well hydrated skin is unmistakable, the product does deliver.

Part of the appeal of Belif products is that they contain no added fragrance. I’ve never had a bad reaction to them even with my sensitive skin. Usually fragranced products irritate and occasionally leave me with little bumps. Never the case with Belif. It’s down to the purest herbal ingredients that go into their products. No artificial preservatives, parabens, sulfates or phthalates, no mineral oil or any animal origin ingredients.

It’s perfect for any skin type!

Bottom Line

If you are keen on trying something K beauty, or just looking to add an indulgent mask to your skincare cabinet, I highly recommend checking this product out. Also, do check out the Aqua Bomb True Cream. It’s one of my favourites from Belif!

CHANEL Cleansing Collection 2018 Review

CHANEL cleansers

Early June Chanel launched a range of new cleansers. I was lucky to receive the product beforehand and been testing everything for the past few months. What’s exciting is this collection is complete with cleansers for all needs. From an oil for makeup removal to a foaming cleanser for daily use, to everything in between!

According to the press release, the collection was created keeping skins balance in mind, and contains two key marine active ingredients. Blue Micro-Algae to protect the skin from micro-stress generated by pollution, and Marine Salicornia with it’s ability to self-regulate water and for skin strengthening actions.

These cleansers give you a thorough cleanse removing makeup and impurities while maintaining the skin barrier and PH for comfortable soft skin that’s radiant and stronger.

Chanel cleansers

LE LAIT FRAICHEUR D’EAU Anti-Pollution Cleansing Milk-to-Water

Is a mildly scented, light cream that melts into a watery texture when massaged into the skin, then wiped off with cotton or in my case, rinsed off. Every single use I noticed that this leaves a thin film on the skin and doesn’t rinse off completely and therefore preferable for days when the skin’s feeling drier than normal.

*According to instructions on the box, it is to be wiped off with cotton, though I still prefer to wash away all traces of cleanser, so I proceeded to use it as I always do. If you have dry skin the wipe off method should be ideal.

LE LAIT DOUCEUR D’HUILE Anti -Pollution Cleansing Milk-to-Oil

As the name suggests, goes on a cream to transform into a clear solution which lightly emulsifies milky with water. The formula was gentle and does not irritate the eyes. Once rinsed the cleanser is removed completely without any residue on the skin but feels soft to the touch without feeling dry or tight.

Mildly scented as the Cleansing Milk-To-Water.

LA MOUSSE Cleansing Cream to Foam

Is a foam cleanser. Mildly scented and extra rich in terms of foaminess. This is my favourite for a morning cleanse or a second cleanse if you double cleanse regularly. I like that it never leaves the skin feeling tight or dry. The tube is also pretty large too and a little goes a long way. It will last you a while!

L’HUILE Anti-Pollution Cleansing Oil

The first thing I noticed about L’Huile is that it’s quite heavily scented in comparison to the other three. If you prefer something unscented or have skin that’s easily irritated by fragrance, best try a sample first. What I love though is that this really does take off makeup exceptionally well without having to rub too hard.

Massaged onto dry skin this oil goes on like silk, then emulsifies with water to create a milky solution that rinses off completely with no oily residue. Skin never feels stripped but incredibly clean and soft. It’s a must try in my opinion if you are interested in the collection and my favourite.

Bottom Line

Upon use it’s pretty evident these are luxury cleansers. The sensorial pleasure and textures justify paying extra for. The sleek packaging is just the cherry on top!

Also in comparison to the prices of other luxury cleansers i’ve used before, the Chanel is actually priced better. The Tom Ford oil cleanser (still my favourite) is a lot more $$$ (& reviewed here), so are the cleansers by Sisley or Clé de Peau (who also revamped their entire cleanser line last year & reviewed here). S$64 for Chanel is still within the justifiable margin to me.

My top picks from the new collection are the oil cleanser for daily makeup removal and the foaming cleanser & would recommend them to everyone keen on trying out this line.

Of course depending on your skin type you could try the Milk-To-Water or the Milk-to-Oil versions too which are very soothing on the skin if you have normal to dry skin. Not heavy duty enough to take off a full face of makeup, but wonderful if you don’t wear a LOT of makeup daily and are looking for something special for removing daily grime and pollutants.

*All cleansers within the line are mentioned as suitable for all skin types.

A Guide to La Mer Moisturisers

My own experience with the brand began when I picked up a jar of their Soft Cream about 6 years ago. Since then, many formulations and new technology have been introduced within the moisturisers category, and i’ve finally managed to test them ALL!

Currently there’re three favourites I keep in rotation. These are my go-to’s which I constantly turn to when my skin needs extra TLC and moisture.

If you’ve been eyeing the moisturisers and unable to make up your mind on which formula to invest in, I hope my review would be of use to you. The options can be overwhelming if you are new to the brand. I know.

La Mer

The current portfolio of La Mer Moisturisers contain the original Crème de la Mer, Soft Cream, Soft Lotion, Moisturizing Cool Gel Cream and the Moisturizing Matte Lotion.

The latest release (just last month) was the Cool Gel Cream that replaced the Gel Cream. Perfect for summer months and anyone with combination skin.

La Mer Cool Gel Cream

All formulations of the La Mer moisturisers contain the nutrient rich ‘Miracle Broth™’. An ingredient derived from Sea Kelp which was discovered by Dr. Huber (the founder).

This Miracle Broth boasts an array of benefits. Accelerates skin regeneration, nourishes skin, heals and soothes. Over time skin looks radiant, with less visible lines and supple. Overall, younger looking.

Here’s a quick look at some swatches I took, so you get an feel of the texture.

(T-B) Lined up from the lightest to the richest formula.

Moisturizing Cool Gel Cream – A translucent gel that’s cooling up on application. The formula delivers a burst of hydration leaving the skin supple to the touch. Skin immediately looks refreshed and healthy with a light radiant glow.

This formula is ideal for warmer months, humid conditions and anyone with combination skin. I use this as a morning moisturizer. Perfect to be worn under makeup as it hydrates well but doesn’t create an additional oily layer on the skin which could cause makeup to slide off. Suitable for normal, combination and oily skin types.

Moisturizing Matte Lotion – The lightest cream formula of the 5 moisturizers. I find the hydration capabilities similar to the Cool Gel Cream. However in my personal opinion, I would pick a gel moisturiser over matte. I prefer my skin to feel really well hydrated throughout the day. This particular formulation, balances shine and softens the look of pores as it doesn’t create an overly radiant look. Ideal for oily skin types or combination skin.

Moisturizing Soft Lotion – Provides intense hydration without the heaviness of a thick moisturiser. I would recommend this for day and night for normal or combo skin types. Personally this is my go-to for a night time skincare routine and the convenient pump bottle makes for easy use. The bottle although heavy, I find to be travel friendly as I don’t have to pack a additional spatula! Perfect for normal skin and combination skin.

Moisturizing Soft Cream – Very similar in terms of texture although less runny in comparison to the Soft Lotion. It’s my old favourite.

With prolonged use, skin feels supple and healthy. The overall texture of the skin is improved and noticeably firmer.

This formula is perfect for night time routines if you have normal to dry skin. For the day time I would advice using lesser quantity and making it work. With my combination skin, the Soft Cream wasn’t a suitable option for the day time. Although personally I do enjoy some extra hydration at night, I suspect the rich texture caused a few whiteheads. Therefore hesitate recommending this to anyone with combination skin or tends to have pores that clog easily.

Crème de la Mer – The richest formulation of the 5. More suitable for mature, dry skin as the texture is in fact very rich. I use this mostly in colder climates when my skin gets dry and starts to peel. I ALWAYS pack my mini when I travel, ‘just in case’. It’s great for instant relief for irritated peeling skin and winter weather; also good for hands and elbows or whenever you need some extra moisture. Suitable for dry or mature skin types.

The Cool Gel Cream, Moisturizing Soft Lotion and Soft Cream. The three I rotate in my routine.

Personally the new Cool Gel Cream is my favourite as it’s ideal for combination skin for day time. The hydration level is just right for me and doesn’t feel oily on the skin.

For the nights it’s usually the Soft Lotion or the Soft Cream. These days it’s mostly the Soft Lotion though as my Soft Cream takes a back seat.

Bottom Line

Apart from the positives, I do notice whenever I use the thicker formulations of La Mer, my t-zone starts to clog easily, which brings me to address a question that keeps popping up time and again. Mineral oils???!

The second or third ingredient in every La Mer moisturizer ingredient list i’ve checked contains Petrolatum. Mineral oil. It’s a known ingredient that can cause clogged pores. In an age where skincare is starting to get ‘cleaner’ it’s harder to understand the use of such a filler. My advice is, if you have generally congested skin or skin prone to white heads, possibly pick one of the lighter formulas or look elsewhere. In my experience I do think some of the creams can cause white heads.

The reason I continue to use La Mer even with the mineral oil debate, is because I do notice my skin in better condition while on it. It’s healing and soothing properties make it perfect for sensitive skin like mine, that’s constantly battling redness and irritation.

Have you tried La Mer moisturisers before? I’m keen on hearing your thoughts on this. Please do leave a comment with your experience and which formulation you use, it’d be helpful to others too ❤

Lip Balm Round-Up

Lip balm 2

Testing lip balms has to be one of my favourite things as a blogger. Constantly picking up ‘promising’ lip treats has been my mission in 2017! So finally here’s my thought’s on a few that’s been in rotation.

Chanel – Hydra Beauty Nutrition Nourishing Lip Care

It’s no secret Chanel is all about the ‘luxury experience’, and when they finally released this chic little lip balm a few years ago I decided to grab one. The key ingredient is an extract from the Camellia Flower, a flower closely associated with the house of Chanel. It’s to soothe and coat lips with a waxy formula for instantly hydrated lips.

The balm is mildly scented with a near perfect consistency. Not too heavy or too light, this one’s my everyday go-to in general. Unlike most lip balms in my rotation, it allows flexible use, day or night. Though I find it specially enticing at night just to ensure my lips don’t end up dry from the Air con.

If luxury beauty treats are your vice, this is a perfect addition. Get’s the job done, all the while looking sleek in your makeup bag or vanity top.

Clé De Peau Beauté – Lip Treatment

Unlike most deeply hydrating lip balms, the CPB Lip Treatment comes in the ever so favoured stick packaging. I love this for on-the-go use. Hygienic, nourishing and always in my bag for whenever my lips feel parched.

The formula of this is lighter, doesn’t feel waxy and comes with no noticeable scent. According to the official web site, it’s said to restore plumpness and reduce any peeling.

What I love about this is the consistency is perfect for pre-lipstick application. Of course there are many cheaper lip balms that do this job perfectly well, but I had to try the Clé de Peau one if only for the need to try all things Clé de Peau as a regular user of the brand. Btw, did you notice the pink marble style cap? Sooo cute!

Elizabeth Arden – 8 Hour Lip Protectant

Every beauty editors favourite SOS balm now comes in a travel friendly tin. At first it was the wanderlust inspired packaging that got me. Subsequently, the powers of the tried and tested 8 Hour formula won me over outta the blue. It’s a nourishing, thick oily balm for whenever your lips are going though that dry phase. What I love is that, this classic doesn’t come at a steep price. Keep one in your hand bag, on your bed side table or at office. It’s affordable and gets the job done.

P.S – you can rub in the excess on your cuticles too, this works great as a barrier balm to stop your nails/cuticles from drying out! An inflight staple for me.

Laneige – Lip Sleeping Mask

The Laneige mask is one of those incredible finds over the years. It’s been my best friend when my lips are beyond help and just needs some extra TLC.

Thick, but in a melty, buttery smooth texture, this little gem comes in several mouth watering flavours. It truly does smells DELICIOUS, and I’d say backup worthy.

The hero ingredients that make this balm a winner includes a Berry Mix Complex, berry extracts that contain vitamin C and anti-oxidants to restore lips to their supple state. Secondly, a Moisture Wrap technology that forms a moisturising film to lock in hydration (a mix of hydro ion mineral water, evening primrose root extract and Hunza Apricot extract).

This Sleeping Mask comes in several flavours, and when in doubt, choose Berry (the original). Smells like an absolute DREAM!

La Mer – The Lip Balm

One more beauty editor favourites. This one’s an OG! Infused with La Mer’s patented Miracle Broth, the Lip Balm hydrated DEEPLY and softens any dry flakes to be easily scrubbed off by morning.

It’s the very first luxury balm I ever owned.

As with all things La Mer, the ingredients are designed for anti-ageing and deep hydration. Keeping the lips looking younger by plumping and smoothing. Do you need such an expensive balm? Probably not. But this does work extra hard to keep those lips ultra kissable!

Ettusais – Lip Essence

The most affordable lip choice of the lot, and something i’d recommend to EVERYONE.

Not only does it soothe and soften dry lips overnight. I find this works even better as a lip mask than the Laneige.. A few consecutive nights of this lip oil repairs my lips like no other.

Unscented. Great packaging and handbag friendly.

Bobbi Brown – Extra Lip Tint

I thought i’d include one lip balm that’s also a lip tint. And my favourite is by Bobbi. May not be as popular as the Dior Lip Glow, but this does the exact same thing. But only better (in my honest opinion).

Firstly, I find this provides longer lasting hydration with the same pretty tinted lip effect. Also, keeps the lips emollient even after meals and constant drinking though out the day.

If the sleek white packaging hasn’t swayed you already. I’d assure you it’s one of the best lip treatments you’ll find.

Bottom Line

Personally I find a use for all of these. They work for me in various situations and as someone who’d perpetually suffering from dry lips, these are saviours and therefore must-haves!

Do you have any balm recommendations that hasn’t made it to this post? Let me know i the comments! I’m always up for trying your suggestions! x

New By Terry Baume de Rose Body Scrub, Lip Scrub & Lip Care Crayon | Review

My first entry for January starts with a pretty pink release by luxury french beauty brand, By Terry!

By Terry baume de rose 2018

There’re three new products that were added the existing Baume de Rose family.

Baume de Rose Body Scrub

Baume de Rose Lip Scrub

Baume de Rose Lip Care (crayon)

Apart from the visually pleasing pink packaging, this collection is sure to appeal to all rose lovers. The iconic scent of Baume de Rose is present in all three.

Up first is the exciting new lip care stick and scrub. Beautifully packaged in minimal, stylish pink.

By Terry Lip Care and Scrub

What I love about balm sticks is the convenience of application. No more grubby fingers poking into jars! Therefore hygienic application and also prolonged shelf life. I’m actually surprised By Terry hadn’t thought of launching this earlier.

If you are a fan of the iconic Baume de Rose, this new crayon makes a lovely addition to your handbag. Just as comforting, nourishing with a touch of luxurious Rose flower essential wax & Vitamin E to keep the lips supple all day. The only difference between the original pot and this crayon is the formula is less buttery and thick, which I believe was better as an overnight lip repair treatment. The stick version is more of a light balm that delivers long lasting hydration for day time. It’s colourless and goes on thin which makes it ideal as a pre-lipstick lip perfecter too.

The Lip Scrub is described as an “ultra-gentle scrub that delicately smoothes, refines & beautifies the lips. Super charged with Rose butter, Rose flower essential wax, Rose hip oil & oil extracts of Black Rose & Pastel Rose, it’s sugary rich balm leaves lips hydrated, nourished and more comfortable”.

The first thing I noticed was that the granules are suspended in a ultra creamy formula and rather sparse. For lips that tend to get extremely flakey, this most certainly will not be getting rid of every single flake. Personally i’d opt for something slightly more gritty with less creaminess for thorough exfoliating.

However, as the description, the smoothing ingredients do soften and nourish the lips for a pillowy pout. Something that would work for regular upkeep and comfort for anyone living in colder and dry weather or just have naturally dry lips that need constant care.

Lastly, my favourite product of this launch. The Body Scrub.

It’s no secret i’m addicted to luxury body care. I find myself continuously reaching for products slightly on the higher price range as the ingredients and textures are usually more cosmetically elegant & refined. Basically you are paying more for the ‘experience’.

If you strictly indulge in budget body care, this one’s obviously not for you. But! I do believe, if you read my blog and follow me here, you are more likely a luxury skincare junkie too! Yes?

The consistency and granule size is perfect for a gentle but thorough scrub. The sugar particles don’t feel scratchy or harsh, and leave the skin feeling smooth and velvety after use. My preferred method of use is applying this directly on dry skin and emulsifing by adding some water halfway through. Smells amazing btw and gets the job done!

What’s noticeably special about this formula is that it’s deeply hydrating & nourishing even after rinsing.

Reading the ingredient list I find this includes Rose butter, Rose Hip oil and also Black Rose oil extract just as the lip scrub. All that keeps skin supple and moist & perfect for dry skin and drier weather.

Bottom Line

My top pick of the collection is the Body Scrub! It’s just such a luxurious treat after a long day. Trust, your body will love you for a nice scrub down with some luxurious and skin loving ingredients. Of course, the price is steep. But then again, we are talking expensive ingredients and a product that’s effective and also feels amazing.

The Lip Care Crayon is a good everyday staple. The product works and provides long term hydration. Something I always look for in lip products.

The only product that didn’t live up to expectations was the Lip Scrub. As far as an effective lip scrub goes, my experience was rather underwhelming (even though this is classified as ‘ultra-gentle’ and I should be expecting a softer exfoliation). Basically a lot more granules would be required for this to work on my flaky lips.
