NARS Audacious lipstick swatches PART 4

Helllooo again!

The final installment of my NARS swatch fest. Phew! But wasn’t it a tempting treat so far? Here’s more to fuel the fire!

NARS lipsticks Audacious

NARS describes these as, ‘Modern Lipsticks so shamelessly seductive in touch and texture the sensation is audacious. Unabashed luxury glides on like satin across the lips with single-stroke coverage. A spectrum of 40 shades of unstoppable impact. Swipe on. Strike bold.

The product promises-

* One stroke full coverage, creamy wear.

* Luxurious texture enriched with ingredients to smooth & nourish lips

* Long Lasting

As stated on the NARS website these pretty much are full coverage opaque colour in one swipe, except for a few of the darker wine colours that didn’t quite hit that mark. The new and improved packaging is also an upgrade from the older version which was a rubbery plastic type that attracted a lot of dust and lint.

The Audacious packaging is much larger and is a smooth matte black with a magnetic closure which snaps into place when recapping. Feels much more luxurious and definitely worth the S$6 price hike. (These retail at S$44)

Todays 10 lipsticks are,

Row 1 top to bottom – Rita, Marlene, Olivia, Leslie, Sandra

Row 2 top to bottom – Jeanne, Deborah, Bette, Ingrid, Liv

Shade descriptions

Row 1

Rita – A neutral leaning slightly warm, deep rich red! This applied ultra smooth and was opaque in one swipe.

Marlene – Described as a brightened brick red, this was a deep orangey brown red with warm undertones.

Olivia – A deep red with a brown undertone.

Leslie – A muted red brown shade.

Sandra – A brighter and warmer version of Leslie

Row 2

Jeanne – A cherry red with a warm undertone. This applied smooth and creamy and was full coverage on the lips in a single swipe.

Deborah – A warm chocolate shade

Bette – An ox blood deep red. This was one of the very few shades that applied almost sheer to medium coverage. The extra emollient formula went on with more slip.

Ingrid –  A deep muted burgundy red. It seemed as though the deep shades swatched rather different to the rest of the 40! This too was sheerer once applied. Although with several passes I achieved semi opaque coverage.

Liv – A cool toned deep violet. This too was a very emollient formula and applied rather patchy.

Top picks

So yet again my favourites were the deep reds! Woops! Hard to break that habit and Rita was my favourite hands down. I loved the richness of it and the formula was sublime.

Jeanne was my pick from the deeper wine shades. The formula was amazing and it’s a great shade for Fall!

Least favoured

Deborah, as the colour was soo unattractive on my lips.

If I had to pick a poor shade based on texture it would be Liv.

**** STAY TUNED for lip swatches of my favourites and an overall review on formula and wear in the next post.

Row 2 Top to Bottom – Vanessa, Jane, Brigette, Barbara, Raquel

Shade descriptions

Charlotte – A dark burgundy red. A stunning stunning colour for fall! The texture of this was more emollient and had a glossy rich sheen once applied.

Audrey – Described as red currant, is a warm muted wine red with brown undertones. This applied smooth & creamy with full coverage in a single pass.

Dominique – A dusty medium mauve lilac.  This shade was very muted and had heavy grey undertones which made it a little dulling on the lips. The application itself was smooth and achieved good coverage in a single stroke.

Anna – A medium cool pink rose shade. The application was smooth and had very good coverage in a single stroke.

Anita – A medium warm rose pink. A perfect MLLB shade if you were on the look out for one.

Row 2

Shade descriptions

Vannessa – A medium muted warm mauvy pink with brown undertones. Application was smooth and creamy with a satin finish.

Jane – A warm terracotta orange with a creamy smooth formula & satin finish.

Brigitte – A warm rose nude with peach undertones. This too was opaque in one swipe and a satin finish.

Barbara – A neutral medium, rosy brown nude. On my complexion this was an updated version of a 90’s lip. Application was smooth & creamy with good coverage in a single swipe.

Raquel – A warm pinky beige nude. Application was smooth and creamy with full coverage in one swipe.

NARS Audacious lipstick swatches

Top Picks

Overall my favourites were the nudes. They came in many different undertones so you are bound to find something that’s suited for you. My personal picks from the nudes would be Raquel, Barbara, Brigitte & Anita.  They all look great on medium to fair complexions except Raquel which is a touch too pale and would look best on fair complexions.

Audrey too caught my eye as it was a very rich wine shade that was perfect for the coming months.

*I also should note that this batch had many lipsticks with a satin finish. Though barely noticeable when worn they still look more like a demi matte.

Least Favoured

Dominique. This was very ‘dusty’ once worn and the grey undertones made it difficult to wear.

I feel this particular batch was very uniform as far as the formula & coverage went. There were no shades that performed poorly so it’s only down to colour preference when it comes to choosing.

NARS Audacious lipstick swatches PART 2

Hi again!

Did you catch the first installment of NARS Audacious lipsticks? If not, head here.

NARS Audacious lipsticks

In this post I feature another 10 of these gorgeous lipsticks. Personally this is my favourite batch as it features mostly reds!

So if red lipsticks are your weak spot, you are in for a treat!

Before the swatch fest, here’s a little background info to get you started.

NARS describes the Audacious line as, ‘Modern Lipsticks so shamelessly seductive in touch and texture the sensation is audacious. Unabashed luxury glides on like satin across the lips with single-stroke coverage. A spectrum of 40 shades of unstoppable impact. Swipe on. Strike bold.

The product promises-

* One stroke full coverage, creamy wear.

So here’s todays 10.

Row 1 top to bottom – Catherine, Julie, Juliette, Natalie, Kelly

Row 2 top to bottom – Grace, Geraldine, Lana, Annabella, Carmen

NARS Audacious lipstick reds

NARS Audacious lipstick

NARS Audacious red lipstick

Shade descriptions

Row 1

Catherine – Described as a sunny guava, this is a medium coral-orange which leans warm.

Julie – A warm peachy pink. A perfect shade for a pretty rose bud pout which would work well on fair to medium skin tones. Application was smooth with almost opaque coverage.

Juliette – A bright pink coral with a faint golden micro shimmer. This was full coverage in one pass.

Natalie – A warm medium coral pink. The formula was just nice and applied smoothly and was opaque in one swipe.

Kelly – This was a coral red. Warmer and deeper in comparison to Natalie. The coverage was excellent and went of very smooth. This had the best texture and smoothest application within the bunch.

NARS audacious swatches

And a closer look,

NARS Audacious lipstick swatches

Row 2

Grace – A deeper more pink version of Kelly. This applied creamy and smooth and achieved full coverage in a single stroke.

Geraldine – A bright warm medium orange. This too was full coverage in a single stroke.

Lana – A bright orange red. The coverage was fully opaque and was noticeably creamier and smooth than the others. There was clearly more slip to this shade.

Annabella – A bright medium poppy red. As with Lana the coverage and application was top notch.

Carmen – A neutral true red. This too applied smooth and was fully opaque in a single swipe.

NARS Audacious lipstick swatches

And a closer look,

NARS Audacious lipstick swatches red

Top picks

So in this batch I had 6 picks (Don’t judge). It was too hard to pick just a few! All were soo tempting!

However what stood out the most to me though was Lana, Annabella & Carmen are must haves if you are keen on reds.

I also loved Kelly & Grace for a super bright pop of colour.

Last of all, I picked Julie. I feel this is a crowd pleaser sort of shade that would look pretty on just about anyone!

Overall most of these colours are great for spring and summer. Soo bright and vivid, and the texture and colour payoff was exceptional. There were no duds here.

Least favoured

Geraldine had to be it. As much as I love orange lipsticks, this was something i’d pass on. It just looked too yellow for my liking.

NARS Audacious lipstick swatches PART 1

Hello!

Welcome to the first installment of swatches of the newly launched NARS lipsticks. The Audacious lipstick range.

NARS Audacious lipstick

Row 2 top to bottom – Janet, Fanny, Silvia, Vera, Vivien

Pink

Shade descriptions

Row 1

Claudia – A cool toned light medium pink. This was noticeably drier in texture in comparison to the others. Although this did not affect the application much and did deliver a nice opaque layer of colour in one pass.

Marissa – A warm toned light medium pink. A very flattering ‘bubblegum’ shade that made it to my personal favourites. This went on smooth and opaque.

Michiyo – A bright medium pink. This swatched smooth and creamy and was a stunning bold colour along the lines of NARS Schiap but with less white, I believe this makes it flattering even on medium to darker complexions.

Greta – A bright coral pink but warmer with more red undertones compared to Michiyo. This too was crazy pigmented and swatched the best from this batch. The texture was smooth and creamy.

Angela – A cool toned medium orchid pink. This went on smooth and opaque with rich colour pay off.

NARS audacious lipstick swatches

And a closer look

NARS Audacious lipstick swatches

Row 2

Janet – This swatched beautifully and had more slip compared to the others. Also worth noting was that this had a faint blue/purple iridescence to it which made it stand out from the rest as everything else was creamy matte or satin matte to the most part.

Fanny – A slightly muted, cooler with more red undertones in comparison to Janet.

Silvia – A bright, medium deep magenta.

Vera – A rich brightened berry shade.

Vivien – A muted neutral berry shade with brown undertones. This felt slightly drier yet was fully opaque in a single swipe.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Top picks

Based on texture and ease of application I picked three. Michiyo, Greta and Janet. These swatched exceptionally well with impressive colour pay off and vibrant hues.

As personal favourites I liked Marissa a lot. A very easy to wear warm pink that would suit most fair to medium complexions. If you are into pinks, this is something that’s worth checking out. And the fabulous colour pay off is a good incentive to pick one up even if you may have similar colours to this!

Least favoured

Claudia was a very difficult colour to pull off as it ran rather too cool toned on me.

Shu Uemura Tint In Gelato Review, Photos & Swatches

Finally! A post on one of the most anticipated releases of this year, Tint in Gelatos by Shu Uemura!

Is it a lip gloss? Is it a liquid lipstick? a blush?!!! These days you can never say cos packaging can be so deceiving >.< Gone are the days when it was only lip gloss that came packaged like this.

So to put your confusion to rest, these are a two in one lip and cheek tint!

Shu Uemura Tint in Gelato

Tint in Gelatos come in 12 shades and are said to be part of the permanent range with just two colours being limited edition, BG01 and AT04 (a warm orange with gold shimmer).

Unlike the Dior Fluid Sticks I reviewed previously, I feel the Gelatos came in a better, balanced shade range. There was something for everyone!

Tint in Gelato Shu UemuraSo these Tint in Gelatos are of a mousse texture. Light and whipped, hence the name 😉

I found them well pigmented and one thin layer easily achieved full opaque coverage.

And although these are meant to be a matte finish, I’d say they are more in between matte and cream. Which in turn make them more comfortable to wear and I never had to worry about my lips cracking.

If you like to sport a matte lip, but have dry lips, this is for you!

Tint in Gelato wand Shu Uemura

Another thing I discovered while I was testing these is, if I used my finger to pat on colour rather than use the wand, I could get a more matte stained look. And the wand to lips application method would provide a more creamy matte look.

(P.S- Exfoliation before application is highly recommended!!!)

So on to swatches!

Tint in Gelato arm swatches Shu Uemura

BG01- A Neutral pinky beige

AT01- A bright red. Almost a true red, but not quite. (My absolute fave from the bunch!)

CR01- A cool bright coral

PK03- Light cool pink with a smidgen of lilac

PK01- A neutral, bright medium pink

Tint in Gelato Lip swatches Shu UemuraJudging from the lip swatches, obviously PK03 was too pasty on me, and would look more flattering on those with skin tones lighter than NC 30!

So how do these perform on the cheeks?

They go on creamy & smooth and dries down to a matte finish with the colour lightening a bit as it sets.

Application wise, I found that (using a brush or fingers) patting and blending disperses colour evenly. I would also recommend using less than you think you need and build up from there 🙂

Final thoughts

I really do love these! They are very well pigmented and and wore as long as 4 hours with no need for touching up.

* and in case you didn’t already guess, these are very similar to the Armani Maestro lip glosses and give the same opaque matte liquid lipstick finish.

A definite home run!

Other info

Two of mine were sent by Shu Uemura for review but I ended up purchasing three more cos I loved it so much!

Tint in Gelatos come with 5.4g of product and retail at SG$38 and are available at all Shu Uemura counters island wide

Online you can purchase them from www.shuuemura-usa.com

Dior Fluid Stick and nail polish in 575 Wonderland: Review, Photos & Swatches

Liquid lipsticks are having a moment right now and first on the high end bandwagon is Dior going all the way with 16 shades of liquid goodness with their new Fluid Sticks.

Dior Fluid sticks nail polish

I had some serious difficulty picking shades as the variety was rather limited although there were a whole 16 to choose from. There were way too many corals and peaches but just one actual pink! How is that a balanced colour chart right? Anyways after swatching and swatching I finally settled for 575 Wonderland a strawberry red shade with a tinge of coral which was one of the 4 ‘It’ or must have shades listed by Dior.

I also picked up two of the nail lacquers that came out with this, 551 Aventure and 575 Wonderland.

Dior Fluid stick wonderland aventure

Today I am only going to review the Wonderland duo, Fluid Stick and nail polish.

Dior Fluid stick nail polish wonderland

Let’s start with the Fluid Sticks!

These Fluid sticks are supposed to be a hybrid between gloss and lipstick, promising vivid, pigmented colour with the added benefit of maximum shine.

As always Dior nailed it with the packaging. Which is what initially drew me to it.. A gloss encased in a lipstick shaped hollow? Just take my money! NOW!

Dior Wonderland Fluid stick

The applicator is of a doe foot type, soft and cushiony. It’s a tad wider than the usual doe foot applicators I’ve seen. Size wise it looks somewhat comparable to the YSL ‘s new Baby Doll Kiss & Blush applicator minus the little bead in the middle. I believe the bigger wand does make application easier if you have fuller lips and gives a smooth finish without ‘wand lines’ running across your lip.

The formula itself is a nice consistency and has the ability to adhere to the lips, by this I don’t mean that they set, just that they don’t seem to move much after it has settled.

I really loved the intense hydrating feel it gave while wear. Lips never felt dry. Only beef I have with these is that if you over apply, it tends to stay very moist throughout and I kept worrying it was going to end up on my teeth, which it did on a few occasions >.< Overall I am pleased with the juicy finish and intense colour pay off 🙂

Here’s a swatch of 575 Wonderland! A close up shot with a macro lens so you get to see the moistness and all my lip lines!

Dior wonderland lip swatch review

This Fluid Stick lasted close to 4 hours with a little fading, slight migrating and feathering around the lip line.

Also note that this transfers, so if you sip a lot of water during the day, this can be a high maintenance lip product with constant need for reapplication. After-meal touch ups is a must, goes without saying 😉

Below a bunch of quick swatches I managed to get while at the counter 🙂 So if you are shopping online, hopefully these would help!

Dior Fluid stick swatches

Dior fluid sticks swatch

Now onto the newly reformulated nail polish 575 Wonderland

Dior Wonderland with drop WM

575 Wonderland nail polish is a bright medium pink shade; and depending on the lighting this can lean a tiny bit coral.

The newly reformulated polish now goes by the name Couture Colour Gel Shine and Long Wear Nail Lacquer and is said to give a smoother finish and as the name implies, longer wear.

I found that the brush of this is less dense than the usual Dior brushes and is slightly slimmer. The extra flexibility allows for a nice neat finish and I do like it more than the old version. As far as the products consistency goes I found this to be slightly runnier. I am not sure if the other shades perform the same but I will keep you updated when I try out Aventure soon 🙂 Usually just two coats of Dior is good enough for me, but with the thinner consistency I had to do 3.

Here’s what it looks like applied. Three coats over a base coat (Skipped top coat so you can see it’s actual finish).

Dior wonderland nail polish swatch

I really love the glossy finish of this. And the final result is pretty neat and looks good. All thanks to the lovely wand!

Final thoughts

Do I think either product is a must have? the answer is no. However it would be nice to own them. All even >.< These pretty nail polishes look lovely colour wise, but I don’t see any major changes in the formula. Hopefully the wear would wow me, let’s see.  These wore up to 5 days with minimal tip wear! Impressive!

But that being said, I fully intend to pick up a back up of Wonderland nail polish cos I love the colour so much!

I purchased mine at the Tangs beauty department in Singapore.

The Fluid Sticks and nail polish retail for SG$47 & SG$38 respectively.

And a special thanks goes out to lovely Fiona at the Tangs Dior counter who assisted me with my purchase and was patient enough to let me swatch all of the Fluid Sticks on her arm! Such a trooper 😀

Thank you for reading!

Guerlain Universal Eyebrow kit

So after a whole week of testing, it’s time for a review…  The Guerlain Universal brow kit.

Guerlain eyebrow powder kit photo

Guerlain Universal eyebrow kit review

In my eyes Guerlain could do no wrong. I love their products right from the packaging down to the faultless formula. Being a big fan of their bronzers and Météorites (reviewed here) , I was super excited to see a new product! And before I knew it, it was on my wishlist! Luckily for me though I was sent a sample by the lovely people at LuxAsia 🙂 And although I’ve been sitting on it for a while, glad that I unboxed this and got busy with my reviewing.

As always starting off with the packaging.

This brow kit comes in a sleek, lacquered black case (not the cheap shiny plastic rubbish) with the Guerlain logo etched in. I love the size of this, compact yet weighty so it doesn’t feel flimsy, it screams luxury at every perfectly curved corner.

Guerlain universal eyebrow kit

Guerlain Universal eyebrow kit brush Inside is a dual ended brow tool which has a spooly at one end and a brow brush on the other, personally I found this a bit too short and felt awkward and clumsy holding it, I’d rather use my regular brow brush, but for an emergency this brush would do just fine!

Also housed in this, is a decent sized mirror that’s good enough for on the go makeup touch ups in case the need arises.

So this palette comes with 4 colours. Three of which are brow powders and one brow highlighter shade.

I really love the idea of 3 brow colours as opposed to 2, which most companies offer these days. I believe this is great for people like me whose hair colour changes with the seasons.  Mine’s courtesy of a 3 hour hair appointment! 😉 But you get what I mean. Scrutinising the brow shades further, I find this palette might not work for everyone, although the name implies that it would. All the colours lean warm and makes me wonder, what about those palest blondes who usually sport a cool toned grey brows?

Luckily where I live, not many fit that description so I think it’s safe to say this one will work for many without any problem 🙂

Guerlain Universal eyebrow kit swatches

Top to bottom

A pale pink highlighter shade

A light warm brown

A medium warm brown with red undertones

A dark warm brown

In case you were wondering how I fill in my brows with this palette, this is how I do it.

I start from outlining the lower brow line with the medium brown shade (I find the brow brush enclosed in the compact perfect for this as it’s very slim and stiff so a precise line can be achieved). Then I fill in the middle portion of the brows using the same shade. I then take the darkest shade and fill in the outer corner of the brows. Lastly I take the lightest shade and fill in the inner corner, rather lightly (I don’t want to end up with a scouse brow as Goss Makeup Artist terms it >.<) and Viola! Done!

If you fancy doing some brow highlighting, you could use the pinky shade just under the brows for an instant lifting effect. Although I need to mention at this point that this particular shade was a bit powdery.. I was afraid it’d look a bit chalky, but it’s not noticeable when blended out.

So here’s my brows done with this palette 🙂

face

Now if you have very sparse brows with gaps in between, usually a brow powder isn’t enough. You need to fill in any gaps with a hard brow pencil before we start filling them in with a brow powder. I usually prefer having a very precise brow look, so I always get a little extra help from one of my trusty brow pencils 🙂 Luckily though good brow pencils can be purchased at all price points so you don’t have to feel bad about using a brow pencil AND splurging on this palette.

Other Info-

This palette comes in one shade- 00 Universel

And retails for SGD 62.

It’s available at all Guerlain counters island wide, (Tangs, Takashimaya etc.)

Colour Crush™ Shine Lipsticks by The Body Shop

Body shop just launched a whole range of sheer lipsticks just in time for the warmer weather.

I received 7 gorgeous shades of these to try out and so far I am really liking them.

Body Shop Colour Crush Shine

Let’s take a look at the shade range of these pretty Colour Crush™ Shine Lipsticks.

Body Shop Colour crush shine lipsticks

The Body Shop Colour Crush lipsticks

12- Raspberry red with golden frost

03- medium pink with a shimmer finish

18- Juicy peach coral shade with no shimmer

11- Peachy beige with no shimmer

06- light brown with a golden shimmer finish (high shimmer)

04- Mauve pink with silvery pink shimmers (high shimmer)

13- A warm deep maroon rose with golden frost (high shimmer)

So these Colour Crush Shine lipsticks are infused with Marula oil to condition and moisturize the lips.

They glide on very smooth and is one of those ‘no mirror needed’ lipsticks that you can even apply blindfolded!

I tested out shade18 for wear, and like you would have guessed these don’t last too long. Not sure how the shimmery version works out, but this one lasted around 2 1/2 hours on me. I didn’t need to reapply as it faded evenly and lips had that ‘just bitten’ look which I quite liked 🙂 I believe these would make for good everyday lipsticks when you don’t want a tonne of pigment but just moist lips with subtle colour for a groomed look. *Note that these wear quite sheer with medium to low opacity.

Here’s how 18 looks worn. Sadly the coral-ness of this neutralised on my pigmented pink lips and ended up looking more of a peachy beige. But I still LOVE this for an everyday shade..

The Body Shop Colour crush lipstick swatches

Here’s another pic of the brighter shades which are more my kind of picks 😉

Body Shop Colour Crush lipsticks

Other info-

These juicy little lipsticks retail at SGD22.90 for 3.5g of product.

Available at all Body Shop stores island wide.

On a side note, I also was informed of the new special edition Raspberry body care range that was released simultaneously with this collection.  Here’s the link for you to take a look at the products on offer.

The Body Butter which promised 24hr hydration caught my eye, and since my Mango Body Butter jar is officially empty, think I might pop by the store to check this one out.  Also while I was snooping around the site (which is perfectly normal behavior on lazy Sundays) I spotted the Eau de Toilettes on offer for 35% in a buy two get one free deal! Think I might stock up as these make for great body splashes during warmer months! 😀

Anyways thank you for hanging around and reading all about my shopaholic tendencies >.< Hope you guys are having a great Sunday!

VDL Love Mark lipsticks

So the other day when my friend Sarah and I randomly made our way to VDL cosmetics to pick up their much raved about eyeliner, I chanced upon these pretty lipsticks.

Once I swatched these I knew I had stumbled upon something amazing! Therefore I shall share it with you too!

VDL Love Mark Festival lipstick

It’s hard to not love the cute embossing on the bullet, but most of all what I love about the packaging is that it comes in a no fuss design, just matte black with a magnetic closure that snaps into place as you re cap the lipstick. Universally appealing and  looks chic coming out of a makeup bag 😉

So onto the colour swatches before we move on

VDL Love mark lipstick swatches

I picked up two lipsticks from the sheerer Moisture Glossy range (Duke and Brooklyn) and three from the Matte Intense (Austin, Jared and Alejandro).

When I wore these I found that the matte version was more of a satin creamy finish rather than a true matte, a very forgiving formula if your lips happen to be on the dryer side. And as the name implies, the Moisture glossy version is juicy like tinted lip balm only more pigmented; I specially loved Brooklyn, it was a very moist wash of coral on my lips, perfect for a quick day makeup look.

Another thing that’s worth mentioning is these lipsticks smell lemony. I thought it was rather queer, as most lipstick fragrances are floral like rose or violet.. still trying to decide if I like it though, I constantly feel like I am eating a lozenge! >.<

Moving on, below are a bunch of arm swatches I put together for you

VDL Love Mark Lipstick Swatches

Austin – A very richly pigmented neutral orange (almost neon).

Brooklyn – A sheer coral

Jared – A cool pink orange

Alejandro – A neutral orange based red

Duke – A neutral pink based beige

From the lot, my favourites were Austin and Alejandro. Both very orange which is currently on trend. If you are feeling bold, I highly suggest you pick up these two. Also the neutral tone of these make teeth look so white! 😀

Other information-

Wear wise, the matte lipsticks lasted over 5 hours through breakfast and coffee (Although I found the lipstick transfered quite a bit, and stained the rim of my glass repeatedly).

I didn’t get to test out the sheer ones for an extended period of time (just briefly had them on and off for 2 hours or so while running errands), my guess is that it’s a maximum of 2 to 3 hours. Although that may be a deal breaker for some, I have to tell you that these feel super comfortable on the lips.

VDL lipsticks retail for SGD 21 and they are currently on offer, 2 for SGD35.

The art of lining- Shu Uemura Calligraph:ink liquid liner

So a couple of months back the Shu Uemura Calligraph:ink eyeliner made it’s way to my hands.

Although I am not someone who wears liquid liner regularly, I have had my fair share of experience with them; more often that not ending with me throwing the liner into my bin in a fit of rage (last victim was the one by Dolly wink).

I believe I speak for many when I say it’s not easy finding that one ’it’  liner.. you really do need to sample a hella lot to get that ideal mix you’re looking for.

So I was pretty pleased when I finally came across something that worked for me, and I am excited to share my findings with you!

Shu Liquid liner calligraphink

First up, let’s start with packaging.

This liner comes in a sleek black barrel with elegant lettering of the Shu Uemura logo in silver.

I really love that the cap shuts close firmly with no danger of spilling. However I did notice a couple of ink splashes when I pull open the cap in a rush. I think it’s to do with the tip being so saturated with ink and the force I used was a bit too much.

Overall I believe the design is quite nice and does have an expensive look, which I quite like.

To make this blog post interesting, I decided to compare it to some of the most hyped up, high end liners that entered the market quite recently.

My choices were, the Marc Jacobs Magic Marc’er and the Tom Ford eye defining pen.

Let’s start with the brush tip.

Shown below are two more brush comparisons for size reference. They depict different ends of the Tom Ford brush tips (felt tip and calligraphy brush tip)

P.S- the Marc Jacobs one is a felt tip.

The Shu Uemura tip is a calligraphy style brush tip.  I love that it’s on the larger side as I prefer to use the side of the brush instead of the tip to draw my lines, this way it’s really easy getting close to the lash line, I just have to rest it along the lashes and follow the contour.

The length of the brush tip makes it more flexible and helps deliver a nice smooth line and I don’t have to keep adjusting the angle of my hand as I go along the eye line. The tip I mainly use at the inner corner and the outer corner to draw the flick.

Shown below are swatches of the three. Please note that I used the Tom Ford calligraphy brush end as it was the most relevant for comparison purposes.

Product performance

When I compare the colour and pigmentation of the Shu Uemura to the TF and Marc Jacobs, there really is no ambiguity as to which was more pigmented. The Calligraph:ink liner wins hands down. One smooth stroke delivers the blackest of black lines with a steady flow of ink throughout.

The Tom Ford was a close second as it did pack a good amount of pigmentation and had the most matte finish. I found the Shu Uemura matte, but a little less compared to the TF. For those who are after a solid matte, I say the TF is better in that sense.

The Marc Jacobs on the other hand was a disappointment compared to the other two. The pigmentation of the ink was the least impressive and I found if I layered it to intensify, the liner got chunky and was prone to emphasizing eyelid wrinkles. I also feared the liner would crack as it looked a bit thick.

Wear wise all three wore very well all day, and didn’t smudge.

Here’s a simple eye look with the Shu Uemura Calligraph:ink liner.

Final thoughts

From the three, my picks would be the TF and the Shu (Shu Uemura being my favourite if I had to choose).

I find the fact it’s refillable makes it very cost effective. And of course it’s the cheaper of the two.

Other Info-

It also should be noted that the Shu Uemura and the Marc Jacobs are waterproof; however though the TF is not marketed as waterproof this too is pretty similar to the other two. No budging when in contact with water.

Shu Uemura Calligraph:ink liner could be purchased in SG island wide at Shu Uemura counters for SGD 58 (refill cartridge is SGD 29).

*Mine was a sample sent for review by the company.

Worldwide, you can purchase this from the Shu Uemura website.

My Tom Ford liner was purchased from Neiman Marcus for USD 55.

Marc Jacobs from Sephora for USD 30.
